Travel (My Travel Experience): Evan Richard Hall
Magazine Crew Sales

At the age of 23, I decided that I would love to use my sales skills while I traveled the country and sold magazines door to door. It was exciting to think of all the different cities and states that I would get to travel while making money and having fun. I remember getting on the Greyhound Bus in Victorville, CA and arriving at Jacksonville, FL 5 days later. After knocking doors, the first few days with my trainer she kept asking me if I used to be on a different crew. I achieved 28 sales my first week of working with Liberty Sales Inc. We were in a contest to reach 100,000 points to use towards college to further our education. We would carry a leather pouch with receipts and our magazine brochure that showed the points for each magazine purchased. I remember we would all wake up every morning at 6:00 to shower and get ready. At 6:45 we would all gather in a circle and chant songs to motivate us and wake us all up. After 20 minutes of a round robin chant, we would proceed to the nearest gas station to buy our drinks & food. Every night on the weekdays we could draw $20 from our accounts for the next day to survive off the next day. On the weekend we would receive a lump sum of all the commission we would make that was extra after the $100 for the week. The commission off the magazines ranged from $15 - $25 depending on what the customers would pick out. But let’s face it if you didn't sell you didn't eat. We knocked doors for 12 hours a day 6 days a week. But if you can sell a magazines door to door you can pretty much do anything. It was honestly one of the best experiences and accomplishments that I’ve ever achieved every day was a new adventure. After 6 months of being one of the top agents they decided to promote me to trainer. My job was to knock doors with all the new agents and show them the best tactics to use. Its more believable that you’re in a contest when there is more than one person at the door trying to win the contest. A few months later I became a transporter. My job was to scope out the territory that the agents were going to knock doors in and pick them up after a hour or two and move them to a new neighborhood. This is where my first leadership, communication, and management adapted. Now every day was a race to get the most sales between me and the other crew leader Jeff. The first one to reach 50 sales between all the agents in the car finished and could have fun the rest of the day. I traveled in the 5 years that I supervised my crew to every single state except Maine and New York. We would stay in one city/state for two weeks and take off to the next destination. What ended it was when I received a phone call that my father in Las Vegas wasn't doing too good. He was in the intensive care unit with a breathing tube down his throat to help keep him alive. The next day I was on a plane to Vegas. . . Mag Crew changed my view of the world, and each day was a new challenge and adventure....
