This attachment is based on a completed project in which I had to choose a culture and identify the characteristics, the values and how they differ from my own culture. Though the culture I discuss was the elderly population, it gave me tools in working with families of my students to better understand the view of grandparents or elderly people having to take care of children. In this assignment, I learned about the importance of different cultures during initial investigation when trying to choose a culture. When deep diving into this culture I learned how important a cultures values can affect students and families and how as a counselor I must be informed of those values because it will greatly benefit my students. Understanding someone's culture can help build a relationship and better support the things that a student may value.

Prompt #1:
In your own words, summarize how serving in both elementary and secondary schools has contributed to your understanding of the diverse developmental needs of K-12 students, including exceptionalities? What have you learned about how K-12 students differ in their development and approaches to learning? How have you created opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners?
Working in both an elementary as well as a secondary placement has expanded my knowledge on how to help students at all stages of life. Learning how students with exceptionalities present different things at different stages has helped me be prepared at any level to help students. When working with the K-5 student population I was unsure how they learn and how they work. Shortly after spending time with them, they are so hands on and so exciting to work with. They learn through so much modeling and playing that helps to foster a positive learning environment for them. The older students in the secondary setting have a much different approach, working with them through stages of development and the struggles they face is much deeper and emotionally it was vital I learn the signs to look for. As a counselor I looked to be creative for all my students that needed support outside the classroom, by creating extra time for small groups, learning how they learn best and helping to build positive relationships, I created opportunity for students that was outside the normal learning environment to help them. Understanding this population of students and how to support them in 504 and IEP plans is important as a counselor to create these opportunities that give all populations the same representation and support.
Prompt #2: – The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) states, “The professional counselor recognizes that the client’s beliefs (or absences of beliefs) about spirituality and/or religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning.” How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including K-12 students’ religious and spiritual supports, especially if religion and spirituality are valued by the K-12 student?
Learning about students religious and spiritual beliefs can show a lot about why the student functions they way they do. Though as the counselor in a public school you cant talk about religion with your students, you can see how important it can be within that students life. It often serves as a guide for students and can help the counselor understand what the values the student and the family may have. Working in multiple settings throughout this program, religion can play a role at all ages and no matter the age the worldview helps the counselor to see the rationale on decision making at all stages of development.
Prompt #3 – How have your field experiences contributed to your understanding of the importance of including the K-12 student's family, community, and culture as a source of support?
Having the students family involved is a pivotal piece to helping any student. No matter the stage of development, the presenting issues or the solution you view as the counselor, it is so important to support the student through involvement with all the people in their lives. When a student has family involvement, I have seen in my experiences how much that can mean to supporting the student. In order to make students feel safe and supported, you should look to always involve the people that have the most influence on that students life.
Prompt #4 – How has your field experience strengthened your professional identity as a school counselor? What aspects of the school counselor's role, scope of practice, and the referral process have you learned from collaboration and consultation?
This field experience has helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses as a school counselor. By being placed in schools of different ages, it has helped me learn the skills I need as a counselor for students of all ages. This experience helped me grow and learn from other student service staff around me that helped me to see others views and to learn the true job that a school counselor is expected to do. Learning how many people are involved in a students life, and just how much a difference we can make was such an eye opening experience that I learned in this field experience. Being placed in the school that was both elementary and secondary, I learned the skills that I need to be able to support these students no matter my placement and feel more well rounded as a counselor than before. Working with different counselors taught me different things that I will take from all them to ensure I am using all the tools I have been provided to do my ultimate job and support my students.
