This rotation was a unique and valuable experience compared to others. Pediatrics requires a different approach in many aspects, especially when it comes to dosing, as children are not just “small adults.” It also involves tailored communication skills and a deeper level of care to meet both patient and caregiver needs.
Throughout this rotation, I gained solid knowledge and hands-on experience in pediatric pharmacotherapy. I also had the opportunity to deliver a case presentation, which further strengthened my clinical and presentation skills.
One of the key highlights was delivering a clinical presentation on Celecoxib as an OTC medication, under the supervision of Dr. Layth Alshohayli , which further developed my confidence in evidence-based practice and professional communication
During this rotation, I participated in daily ICU rounds with the multidisciplinary medical team, providing therapeutic recommendations and clinical interventions for critically ill patients. These discussions helped me strengthen my ability to apply pharmacotherapy concepts in real clinical settings.
I also presented a topic review about Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and led a journal club titled “Lactated Ringer’s versus Normal Saline in the Management of Acute Diabetic Ketoacidosis (RINSE-DKA)”, which enhanced my understanding of evidence-based practice in critical care.
During my academic rotation, I gained valuable experience under the supervision of Dr. Yahya, particularly in preparing and delivering educational sessions to students. I learned effective strategies for organizing teaching materials, simplifying complex clinical concepts, and engaging students during discussions. In addition, I was involved in the assessment process, where I observed and participated in evaluating students’ performance, including conducting counseling-based medication assessments for some students. This experience enhanced my confidence in both teaching and evaluation roles. Furthermore, I presented a journal club, which helped me improve my critical appraisal skills, deepen my understanding of current literature, and strengthen my presentation abilities. Overall, this rotation significantly contributed to developing my academic, communication, and clinical teaching skills.
???? Pediatric Pharmacy
???? North Clinics Pharmacy
In the Pediatric Pharmacy, I had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Dr. Sarah and Dr. Nora, who introduced me to the most commonly prescribed pediatric medications. Their mentorship helped me strengthen my skills in pediatric counseling and deepen my understanding of age-specific treatments.
At the North Clinics Pharmacy, I worked alongside Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Wadai and learned about the hospital’s service of delivering medications to chronic patients. I gained hands-on experience in electronic prescribing and how prescriptions are integrated with the delivery system (SPL). Dr. Abdulrahman’s questions challenged me to think critically and expanded my clinical knowledge.
During this experience, I significantly enhanced my understanding of medication dispensing processes, patient counseling, and pediatric dosing calculations.
During this rotation, I collaborated with my colleagues Ahmed Alyanallah, and Lenah Alassaf we prepared and presented a discussion on two important topics:
▪️ High-alert medications
▪️ Drug-food/supplement interactions
This experience deepened my understanding and allowed me to translate what I’ve learned into real-life practice.
